Alton Towers’ wanted to advertise its newest ride - Air - to thrill seekers in advance of its actual completion.
Meeting the challenge of translating ‘Air’ to the small screen, Artem built a replica of the rollercoaster’s seats and a rig that tilted through 90 degrees, just like the real ride.
Simon Tayler, who supervised the project, said: “There is no thrill like the real thing, but we had to give a taste of what awaited visitors. The technical challenge was to give the actors an experience that would enable them to convey the impact of ‘Air’ in reality.”
“In less than two weeks we built a mechanical rig which would carry four occupants, in safety, and move from vertical to prone in four seconds. We simulated the design of the real seats using some parts borrowed from Alton Towers, a set of rally driver’s seats and FIA approved harnesses. Other features were made specially in our workshops.”
