Channel 4’s new female-led TV drama, Adult Material, shines a light on the adult film industry from its seedy beginning to its impact on mainstream culture, raising big questions about sex, consent and power. The action is seen through the eyes of mother and veteran porn star, Jolene Dollar. Written by Lucy Kirkwood (Skins, Chimerica,) the show stars Hayley Squires, Siena Kelly, Kerry Godliman, Joe Dempsie, Rupert Everett and Julian Ovenden.
Project Breakdown
Our client, Fifty Fathoms, asked Artem to create an overflowing cup rig to provide a continuous flow of chocolate from an overturned cup, mounted onto the edge of a hospital table.
For the ‘chocolate’ mixture we used 120 litres of paint-based fake chocolate and 20 litres of coco-based fake chocolate. It took a lot of cleaning up afterwards!
Artem technicians tested and prepped the paint and rig at our west London base and provided on-site attendance for the effect.
Other effects for the production included a wearable knife rig, to simulate a stab injury on an actor, and - for the opening scene of Episode 1 - a car wash rig, involving water kit, foam system and accessories.
We also provided rain and wind effects on set.
Adult Material is a 4x60mins production by Fifty Fathoms for Channel 4. It premiered in the UK on 5 October 2020 and has been picked up by HBO for US SVoD release.
