As part of the Farnborough Airshow 2024, Artem were approached by creative agency M-is to create a full scale concept model of BAE System's Tempest combat aircraft, to display to visitors and VIP guests.
The plane was built from CAD to assembly in just under 10 weeks, shipped in parts to Farnborough to then be fully assembled on-site.
The making began by our technicians extensively redrawing the plane in CAD, splitting it into separate smaller pieces to send to the 7-axis robot, where the parts were carved out of fire-resistant expanded polystyrene.
The fuselage contained a welded steel chassis that acted as the main stabiliser for the plane.
The split wings of the plane had sockets machined for multiple aluminium spars to be placed across the wings, secured in with fibreglass, which would then be bonded together when fully assembled on site.
The parts were sanded and filled, along with a coating of epoxy resin and fire-resistant emulsion paint, to ensure a smooth surface for the projection mapping.
The final assembled plane measured a whopping 78ft in length and with a wing span of 50ft.
